Nuts are one of the best dried fruits for our health. In addition to containing proteins, carbohydrates and unsaturated lipids, they are rich in minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc, as well as vitamin B6.
The walnut fruit in botany, is a dry fruit with only one seed (rarely two). Originally from India and the countries bordering the Caspian Sea, the walnut was introduced in Europe by the Romans, around the 4th century AC. It was a very popular dried fruit on the tables of the wealthiest families in the Antique Rome.
Eating nuts daily promotes the increase of beneficial bacteria for the intestine.
In a study published by The Journal of Nutrition, which involved people with excess weight and/or obesity, improvements were found in terms of cardiovascular health, namely the decrease in blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL values. The recommended daily dose in this study is 85g of nuts per day.
Nuts contain melatonin, the main substance responsible for regulating sleep cycles and ensuring a peaceful sleep. That is why many experts recommend eating three to four nuts for dessert in the evening.
As a source of vitamin B6, walnuts help in the proper functioning of the nervous and immune systems. It also contains folate (vitamin B9), essential for the production of genetic material. Folate prevents fetal malformations and is indicated for all women of childbearing age.
Nuts are generally used in sweets, especially cakes and pies and also savoury dishes. They are part of the classic Waldorf salad, a recipe created in the 19th century that takes its name from the famous New York hotel.
