Tommy Hilfiger is interested in reducing its environmental impact by betting on sustainable fashion, creating a collection of sneakers made from recycled apple peel fiber.
Thanks to production processes that use less energy and re-use organic materials, Tommy Hilfiger is reducing its environmental impact. The concept of circular economy, based on the notions of reuse, restoration and renovation, allows a second life to materials that would be considered garbage, ending the notion of “end-of-life”.
Sustainable Fashion: Tommy Hilfiger
Betting on sustainable fashion, Tommy Hilfiger created for the spring/summer 2020 collection, sneakers made with apple skin fibers.
These innovative sneakers were only possible thanks to an Italian startup called Frumat. The start-up Frumat, as its name implies, develops new raw materials with various thicknesses and textures, from fruit. This new raw material made from apple residues, works very well as an alternative to leather.
This model of sneakers is unisex and is available in two colors, white and navy blue. The fibers used make up 24% of the sneaker.
Sustainable fashion does not only concern the choice of materials but also the techniques used to create these recycled materials. It was for this reason that Tommy Hilfiger chose apple fibers over Vegan leather. Vegan leather has more impact on the environment, as it normally contains a lot of fossil materials.
Tommy Hilfiger has been having an increasing environmental awareness and it is not its first product that includes the concept of sustainable fashion. The brand has already developed clothes made with some 100% recycled materials, such as jeans, feathers, wool and cotton.
This is undoubtedly an example for other brands! Sustainable fashion should be the way forward and if all brands had this environmental awareness, it would be possible to reduce pollution and preserve the future of planet Earth.
