If you are reading this article, it is because you are probably freaking out about the idea of being quarantined at home with kids for the upcoming days, weeks or even months…!
So, as a father of a newborn, I have made a small list of things you should have in consideration to keep your kids physically and mentally healthy for the upcoming (long) days ahead. And relax, you’re not alone is this journey!
#1 Be truthful
Explain the situation in an age-appropriate manner and don’t be afraid to reply to all questions, fears and concerns. Always speak in a calm tone and use simple language, find trustworthy sources of information and avoid sharing alarming news.
#2 Set up a structure
To show that everything is under control, it is vital that you keep your family’s routine untouched.
Please, don’t fall into the mistake of spending all day in your pyjamas and watching TV on the couch! So, wake up, take a shower, dress up and make sure everybody respects the usual routine where there is a specific time to sleep, eat, work and of course, to play.
Keeping physically active is critical to boost your mood.
Together with your family, find creative ways to burn calories. Try to think of this as a more energetic play time with your kids… my personal recommendation is the musical chair game. Guaranteed fun!
#4 Vitamin D
On the window, on the balcony or on the terrace, find a way to have at least 10 minutes of solar exposure per day.
#5 Stay in touch
Another critical component of a good mental state is feeling connected to others. Being quarantined at home with kids, technology plays a big role here!
Remember, children are used to highly social environments, so please schedule vídeo calls with their little friends from school and of course with the rest of the family.
While each one should have its own private space, this could also be an unique opportunity for creating or reconnecting with family rituals. This might be as simple as a proper sit-down family meal, perhaps with a new recipe the kids have been involved in preparing or by simply playing with your kids without feeling tired from a long day of work and commuting.
Families should consider things they can do together – like planning for a movie night, taking on a large project such as building something together, or even rearranging the furniture.
Consider this a great time to slow down.. to enjoy each second and be 100% commited to who we spend our time with.
