The Sleep Journey : Receita de Folar easter cake Simple and delicious Easter cake recipe TheSleepJourney Folar 1200x800

Even though “Folar” is a typical Easter cake in Portugal and there is a huge variety of recipes, we would like to show you one that you will want to make all year long! The result of this folar is a sweet and dry bread, that you can eat just out of the oven or also, toasted with butter. Both options: DELICIOUS!

In the recipe that follows, we removed the decorative elements from the folar, as it is the case of boiled eggs usually put on top.

Ingredients

  • 250ml milk
  • 2 tablespoons of powdered baker’s yeast (or 60g of fresh baker’s yeast)
  • 2 eggs
  • 500g of flour (without yeast)
  • 110g of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 100g of melted butter
  • 1 egg yolk to brush before going to the oven

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees;
  2. Add all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir well until a uniform dough;
  3. Knead the dough with your hands for a few minutes;
  4. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rise for 45 minutes;
  5. After leavening, take the dough with your hands, form a ball (or the shape you prefer) and place it on an oven tray, lined with greaseproof paper;
  6. Brush the dough with the yolk and place in the oven for 35 minutes (until the outside is darker. You can also do the toothpick test).

This is what the Easter cake should look like when you take it out of the oven!
